Montevideo, capital of South America's second smallest country, Uruguay. Offering the perfect combination of charm, culture and style. Spend time exploring this city that is rich in history from its cobbled streets in the old town to the evocative Mercado del Puerto port market with its 19th century buildings.
Today on arrival into Montevideo you will be transferred to your boutique hotel in the heart of the city. Enjoy the stunning coastal capital of Uruguay, which revolves around the Plaza Independencia, which leads to the old town (Ciudad Vieja), filled with art deco and colonial architecture. The city is home to a charming old port market and has a friendly, laid-back feel.
Today you will learn about the origins of Uruguay. Starting at the Independence Square you will see the Palacio Salvo and the Puerta de la Ciudadela, the old gate and outer walls which guarded the citadel during ancient times. Explore the churches museums, libraries and theatres of Montevideo and learn about the Spanish and African roots of the annual ‘carnaval’ that takes place here. You will end your tour at the lively port market which is home to many traditional steakhouses where you can have lunch (not included) and enjoy some of the local wine that Uruguay is famous for.
Enjoy a tour of the new part of the city, which is home to wide, tree-lined streets and luxurious mansions. See the multi coloured congress building and continue on to the open city where you will find an abundance of parks and green spaces. See the Centenario Stadium and explore the residential neighbourhoods. You will also visit a museum, market or exhibition depending on your schedule and preferences and if possible on the day visit the studio of Fernando “Lobo” Nunez, an Afro-Uruguayan luthier and drummer, who is well known in the Candombe music scene. He will open the doors to his studio and you will learn more about the history of Uruguay and how the country was the first to abolish slavery and has now become one of the most progressive in Latin America.
