Colonia del Sacramento, or simply Colonia is a small, colonial city on the banks of the Rio Plata in the south of Uruguay - just a short ferry ride from Buenos Aires this Portuguese settlement is filled with cobblestone streets and oozes history and charm. It's old town is UNESCO Heritage Listed and the historical centre is home to many charming boutiques, restaurants and cafes.
Enjoy a walking tour with a local guide and visit some of the excellent local museums, followed by an authentic mate tasting. You'll also partake in a wine and cheese tasting and soak up all of the atmosphere that this hidden gem has to offer.
Today you’ll be transferred to the port in Buenos Aires and take the fast ferry across to Colonia Del Sacramento, Uruguay. On arrival you will be transferred to your hotel and then enjoy a walking tour of the cobblestoned streets of this UNESCO World Heritage site. The city was founded by the Portuguese and it’s magical historical feel remains intact. See the old city gate and street of sighs and visit local churches, museums and squares. Experience a traditional tasting of mate, a bitter herbal tea that is preferred here over coffee.
Uruguay is well known for it’s food and wine. The country is the fourth largest wine producer in South America and mostly produces res wines, from Tanant grapes, but is also starting to gain international attention for its white wines. Begin the day by heading to a local vineyard and bodega where you’ll enjoy wine and olive oil tastings. Continue on to a cheese farm and learn about the production process, which is guided by sustainable and organic practices, followed by a delicious cheese tasting.
You’ll be transferred back to the pier and take the fast ferry back to Buenos Aires. You will then be transferred to the airport in time for your onward journey.
