Kapisillit, which means Salmon in Greenlandic, is a small settlement of just under 100 people at the head of the Nuuk fjord. The real attraction today is the cruise journey along the fjord to reach and leave Kapisillit. In calm conditions, the reflections of the mountains in the still fjord waters are breath taking.
History and scenery combine to make today special! Umivik bay is fringed by many glaciers which calve their icebergs into the sea. On the northern shore of the bay are two abandoned settlements: little remains today. Our landing here takes place 131 years (almost to the day!) after Nansen stepped ashore in this bay to begin his pioneering crossing of the Greenland icecap.
Day 15: Port Stanley / Falkland Islands. Disembarkation and transfer to the international airport Mount Pleasant and flight to Santiago de Chile (included in the ship’s passage price).
*** Important - Please be sure not to book flights out of Ushuaia before 12PM on the day of your cruise departure.
Days 11 – 14: At sea - On our way to Port Stanley we are again followed by a great selection of seabirds while crossing the Southern Atlantic.
Day 9 – 10: At the rarely visited and uninhabited South Sandwich Islands (British Territory), where we will try to land on Zavadovski Island, home to over a million pairs of breeding Chinstrap Penguins, making it one of the world's largest penguin colonies. Other landings will be pursued on the steep-sided Candlemas Island, Saunders Island, Montague Island and/or Southern Thule, depending on weather and landing conditions.
